Coach Is Key To Soccer Success Kelly Cagle has the experience under her cleats to prove that soccer was her calling. "I've always had a passion for soccer and my goal was to play as long as I could," said the Virginia Tech women's soccer head coach. Cagle once played professional soccer with the Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) Atlanta Beat before she began coaching at Virginia Tech in 2002. During her time at Tech, she than has turned the women's soccer program around. Before her arrival, the team had no winning seasons and only one win over a nationally ranked team in a 10-year period. In Tight Times, Tech Baseball Is A Great Deal It's not Lane Stadium on a Saturday afternoon, but for a Virginia Tech sports fan, English Field is enough, and even better, it's free. "Nothing is better than a Saturday at the ballpark," sophomore John Myers said. "Plus, here it's free and has everything I love about sports and Virginia Tech. They even have Enter Sandman and the Hokie Pokie." With the recent economic troubles, students and adults are constantly searching for cheap entertainment and that may have a direct hit on the sports world. Attending sporting events can get expensive and that has many higher-ups in area sports concerned. Club Soccer Beats Rival JMU The Virginia Tech men's club soccer team defeated rivals, James Madison University Dukes, 2-0 in the final leg of the Route 81 Cup early Sunday. "JMU is our biggest rival," said Virginia Tech midfielder Matt Smith. "I was very excited to play JMU today." Although the Hokies regular season takes place in the fall, Smith says the men utilize the spring games to give new players a look and work on tactics. Terps Spoil Softball Senior Day The Maryland Terrapins capitalized on a fourth inning defensive meltdown, spoiling the beautiful weather and the Virginia Tech softball team's senior day to beat the Hokies 4-1. Virginia Tech head coach Scot Thomas was disappointed in the lack of focus by the team, "It's not the big plays we are needing to make, its catching and throwing the ball and making the routine plays...it's the simple things. " Salem Walks Off With A Win The most exciting thing fans had to cheer about through the first six innings of the Salem Red Sox baseball game Saturday was the free giveaways from Lewis-Gale Medical Center. Fans got a really good look at a pitcher's duel between Salem's Eammon Portice and Myrtle Beach's Jeffrey Locke, as the first six innings saw only three hits and took just over an hour to play. "Their guy [Locke] had great stuff tonight, and he wasn't making any mistakes," said Red Sox infielder Kris Negron. "He was frustrating us and putting a lot of pressure on us. ... He had great location, and his slider had a lot of movement tonight," Salem first baseman Mike Jones said.
Williams Leads Maroon Past White In Spring Game An estimated 41,000 Hokie fans filled Lane Stadium on Saturday to see Ryan Williams lead the Maroon team to a 13-7 victory in the annual spring game. Williams had 151 all purpose yards including a 56-yard touchdown reception from Ju-Ju Clayton with just under five minutes left in the first quarter. "That play right there is the best feeling I've had so far, in front of all these people. And my mom hadn't really seen me play since my junior year in high school. And I always find her before the game and I make sure every time I score I point to her," Williams said. Lacrosse Falls To UVa 13-5 Virginia Tech women's lacrosse fell to the University of Virginia 13-5 in the opening game of the Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship. "The score didn't reflect how well we truly played," said sophomore Joanna Kiser. Virginia Tech was chosen to host the ACC Championship this year for the first time in the programs history. According to sophomore Mary-Kate Larkin, the ACC teams always rotate the hosts. |
Beamer, Others, Deliver Rousing Talk On Legendary Challenges Enter Sandman blared from the speakers while the crowd was standing, anxiously awaiting the arrival of Virginia Tech head football coach, Frank Beamer, to the stage of room 64 in the Graduate Life Center. On Saturday, Beamer joined Christopher Neck, who holds a doctorate in management, and Eddie Royal, current Denver Broncos and former Virginia Tech wide receiver, as participants in the Legendary Challenge seminar. Hundreds of people, including camera crews from Roanoke TV stations, packed into the auditorium to learn about leadership and accomplishing goals, or "legendary challenges." "A legendary challenge is any really important goal in your life, that you feel can make a difference, whether it's in your professional life, your personal life or to benefit your community," event host Michael
Woodhead said.
Fixed Riders To Hold Bike Event The Fixed Riders of Blacksburg will host Ride Free and Die Hard, a collective bicycle event at 211 Barger St., Friday. The Fixed Riders of Blacksburg, a local group on Facebook run by Virginia Tech students, received sponsorship for the event by Keirin Culture, a bicycle company, and Red Bull. "There are four events people can choose to participate in." said Zack Madrigal, Fixed Riders member. "A track stand competition, long distance skid competition, tournament style sprint, and an alley cat like scavenger hunt race." Baseball Sweeps Terps With conference wins at a premium, the Hokies Baseball traveled up to College Park to take on the Maryland Terrapins this past weekend. The Hokies swept the Terps, notching three wins to their record to 7-10 in conference and 21-12 overall. Hokies Baseball Falls in Extra Innings Both Virginia Tech and Wake Forest came out ready to entertain fans at English Field on a beautiful April day by showcasing their high-powered offenses. Wake Forest slipped by Tech with a 15-14 final in 10 innings. The two teams combined for 29 runs, 24 hits, and 5 errors through the 10 frames. Windy conditions made for a high scoring game as hits that would normally have stayed in the field of play carried over the wall. Seven home runs were hit between the two teams, resulting in the offense-heavy game. Wake Forest (17-11, 5-9 ACC) capitalized off of timely hitting from its big bats to come back and tie the game in the top of the ninth inning. Evan Ocheltree, OF, connected on the first pitch from relief pitcher Brandon Fisher, r-So., and put the ball over the right field fence for the second time during the game, putting the Demon Deacons back at a tie with the Hokies. Baseball Downs Dukes On The Road Coming off of a tough series with NC State, the Hokies traveled up I-81 yesterday to take on the James Madison Dukes on a beautiful and sunny afternoon. The baseball team got a much needed confidence boost, with a 4-0 shutout win, bringing its overall record to 16-10. Anthony Sosnoskie, C, led the offense with two hits and two RBIs. Steve Domecus, LF, and Michael Seaborn, 2B, both had one hit and one RBI. The Hokies used five pitchers throughout the game, with the win going to Clark Labitan, who is now 4-1 on the season. Virginia Tech (13-7, 2-5 ACC) started the game with a first inning performance that dictated the tone for the rest of the game. Austin Wates, RF, reached on an infield single and later advanced to second base by stealing his eighth base of the year. Steve Bumbry, 2B, put another runner on for the Hokies with a walk, bringing junior catcher Anthony Sosnoskie to the plate. Sosnoskie wasted no time in taking a 2-0 pitch from Georgia Tech pitcher Zach Von Tersch and sending it over the left field wall for a 3-0 Hokie lead and his fifth homerun of the season. Lady Hokies Tennis Triumphs Over Spiders On Wednesday the Hokie women's tennis team returned to Blacksburg to face in-state rival University of Richmond Spiders. The match began with doubles. Hokies Jessica Brouwer, senior, and Holly Johnson, sophomore, faced Richmond's Pamela Duran and Erin Clark. The Hokies started off strong, winning the first three sets. However, the Spiders rallied back and won the next three sets. Another Year, Another Close Loss To Heels (Video Included) Sometimes you just can't rewrite history, no matter how much you may want to. This time around it looked like Virginia Tech would have enough firepower to grasp revenge and rectify last year's close loss to the North Carolina Tar Heels in the ACC Tournament. Unfortunately for the Hokies, it was more of the same. Leading by one with just :56 left, Tech allowed Tyler Hansbrough to dominate the final minute of the game and push the Tar Heels over the top for a 79-76 win, which knocked the Hokies out of the ACC Tournament. "Our theme for the last 24 hours has been 'same story, different ending,'" said Virginia Tech head coach Seth Greenberg. "Unfortunately, we got the same story and the same ending." |
