Hokies Big Spring In Baseball Also Includes A Loss To Davidson Virginia Tech’s baseball team hadn’t lost to the Davidson College Wildcats since 1981 but that changed this month even as the 16th-ranked Hokies are enjoying one of their best seasons. The 29-year run by the Hokies came to a close last week, as Davidson’s hitters swung their team to victory, 14-10. Now, the Hokies’ May 18 game at Davidson will have a little extra spice on it. It comes in the middle of a schedule-closing Carolina road trip featuring three-game series with Duke and North Carolina. Hokies Get Another Baseball Win On a breezy Saturday evening at English Field, the No. 16 ranked Virginia Tech Hokies turned an early pitching duel into a 12-0 baseball shutout against Savannah State. On Aug. 21, 2005, after a makeover from one of golf’s finest architects, the Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech was unveiled to Southwest Virginia. Now, as it nears a fifth birthday, the course is catching the eyes of many across the country. The course has been recognized by national magazines such as Golf Digest, GolfWeek and Sports Illustrated. Just recently, it was selected by the NCAA to host a 2011 NCAA golf regional. Evans-Williams Combo Looks Great For Hokies Almost nine months after tearing his left ACL, Darren Evans is ready to tear off touchdown runs once again. Evans, once the featured tailback in the Virginia Tech backfield, will suit it up for the annual Maroon-White game in Lane Stadium on April 24. “My knee is feeling good, I feel I can do it,” said Evans. Last week, Greenebrg signed a new six-year contract with Virginia Tech. This year Greenberg led the team to 25 wins. That’s a school record for the most wins in one season. Greenberg has coached the Hokies for seven years and his overall record is 132-94. The Road to the NBA He was faster, stronger and better than anyone else on the court. There are a lot of good players at this gym, but none quite like him. After he finishes breaking down the defense and making a jumper in his opponent’s face, he does it again and again. Tyc Snow is a household name in Northern Virginia. He has been terrorizing local players since his days at Stonewall Jackson High School. Snow is now embarking on a difficult journey from the National Basketball Association Development League or D-league to the NBA. Tech Baseball Sweeps Boston College The Virginia Tech Hokies baseball team swept Boston College in a three-game series over the weekend and improved to 32-14 (14-10 in the Atlantic Coast Conference). Vick was at the Tech Bookstore on Main Street meeting with fans and signing autographs early Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Almost 400 anxious fans packed the bookstore to get up-close with the player who brought so much excitement to the Hokie nation a decade ago. Hokies Lose NIT Quarterfinal to Rhode Island, Exit Cassell in Disappointment What started out as a back-and-forth match-up ended in heartbreak as the Virginia Tech Hokies lost their final game of the 2009-2010 season to the Rhode Island Rams, 79-72. "We're really disappointed," said Tech's Jeff Allen. "We had plans of going to New York and playing in the championship, but unfortunately we didn't finish the game. As for next season, we just need to make corrections from this season's mistakes." Hokies Top Huskies In NIT Thriller Things weren't going well for the Hokies. Scratching their way back from a 12 point first half deficit has sucked most of the air out of the home crowd. But when JT Thompson made a three-point shot as the buzzer sounded for half time, pulling Tech to within five points of Connecticut, the crowd in Cassell Coliseum went wild. Thompson's eight points in a five minute span succeeded in cutting down the lead held by UConn and made a comeback seem possible. Advancing to the next round of the NIT was just barely within their grasp. |
